Uses

Dipyridamole helps reduce the formation of blood clots in people who have had heart valve surgery. It is used in combination with blood thinners such as Coumadin.
Some doctors also prescribe dipyridamole in combination with other drugs, such as aspirin, to reduce the damage from a heart attack and prevent a recurrence, to treat angina, and to prevent complications during heart bypass surgery.
Dipyridamole is sometimes used with aspirin to provide better protection against the formation of blood clots. However, the risk of bleeding may also be increased. To reduce this risk, take only the amount of aspirin prescribed by the same doctor who directed you to take dipyridamole. If you need a medication for pain or a fever, do not take extra aspirin without first consulting your doctor.

How to take

This medication is best taken on an empty stomach but may be taken with meals. Take this exactly as prescribed. Try to take this medication at the same time each day so you remember to take it. Do not stop taking this without your doctor's approval.

Side effects

Loss of appetite, nausea, diarrhea, headache or dizziness may occur at first as your body adjusts to the medication. If these effects persist or become bothersome, inform your doctor. Notify your doctor promptly if the following occur: unusual bleeding or bruising, fainting, skin rash, yellowing eyes/skin. Seek immediate medical attention if the following occur: trouble breathing. Precaution

Drug interactions

If dipyridamole is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. It is especially important to check with your doctor before combining dipyridamole with the following:

Alzheimer's drugs such as Aricept, Cognex, Exelon
Aspirin
Blood thinners such as Coumadin
Heart medications such as adenosine
Indomethacin (Indocin)
Ticlopidine (Ticlid)
Valproic acid (Depakene)

Missed dose

Take it as soon as you remember. If it is within 4 hours of your next scheduled dose, skip the dose you missed and go back to your regular schedule. Never take 2 doses at the same time.

Storage

Store at room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F (between 15 and 30 degrees C) away from moisture and sunlight. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep away from children and pets.
